Coming in 2025 – Mac and Nick

There are constraints when writing Australian-based crime fiction. With American crime fiction, conflict, more often than not, reduces to gunplay. They’re not as prevalent in Australia. And the penalties for illegal possession of a firearm are severe. Typically, up to 14 years for possession of an illegal weapon. (The difference in gun ownership laws between Australia and USA is not a debate point for this post. Maybe later.)

So, when violence erupts, it tends to be more fisticuffs, cricket bats and pointy things. Since my protagonists are well on the other side of youth, they try to avoid the fights. As much as possible.

But sometimes, it’s not possible.

I’ve taken my two favourite Australian PIs, Mac Durrige and Nick Harding, and set them on the same case. Unbeknownst to each other, they’re pulling different threads from the same criminal cloth. They make incidental contact by the midpoints of their respective books and are full-on partners by Act Three.

Each story stands on its own. Both make for a fuller mosaic.

Coming on July 18th.

Blurbs for "Fast Track" and "Do Not Pass Go", published 18 July 2025:

Fast Track: Mac has been scrounging for cases. Business hasn’t been good. Thirteen-year-old Josh just hired him to find his coin collection for the princely sum of $25.
He’s in the middle of that nearly pro bono case when Sophie, his on-again, currently off-again girlfriend, comes to him with a problem. Her best friend, Central Coast Network News reporter Linda Carmody, hasn’t been heard from in over a week.
Completely out of character.

Do Not Pass Go: Nick Harding's fifth case.
With the rotten smell of his last case still lingering, Nick is hired to find a missing person.
His girlfriend, Lucy, asks him to locate Alex Bainbridge, one of her close friends from university and a member of a group of six who have remained in touch since their time there. He is a financial journalist who often goes to the ground during investigations, but this time, he has missed a regular group gathering and has become electronically invisible.

Mac and Nick's respective investigations uncover a financial conspiracy that threatens to topple the government and exposes them to a level of physical danger they haven't encountered in years.
